Carrier example

A dispatcher sees a 720-mile posted rate from Chicago to Atlanta. That 720 represents loaded miles — the paid portion of the trip. The truck also needs deadhead to Chicago and may need empty miles after Atlanta to reach the next reload.

Common mistake

Comparing loads only by loaded miles without accounting for deadhead before pickup and repositioning after delivery — two loads with the same loaded miles can have very different total-mile economics.

How loaded miles fit the rate comparison

Loaded miles are the distance between the pickup and delivery addresses, representing the paid portion of the trip. Brokers often quote rate per loaded mile because that is the lane they control. The carrier needs to measure from the truck's starting point to the final delivery — a longer path that includes approach miles and post-delivery repositioning.

A useful comparison runs gross revenue against loaded miles first, then against total miles. Both numbers belong in the decision file because the first shows the broker's offer structure and the second shows the truck's actual earning efficiency.

Loaded miles versus total miles in the same comparison

A broker may quote a rate per loaded mile because that is the lane distance they control. The carrier's actual per-mile economics include the empty approach and repositioning miles that appear on neither the rate confirmation nor the broker's quote.

Using loaded miles for the broker comparison and total miles for the operating estimate is a practical approach. Write both numbers on the same line before deciding. The loaded-mile rate shows what the lane pays; the total-mile rate shows what the trip earns.
